The first-time law enforcement officers, now commonly known as School Resource Officers (SROs), are permanently assigned to schools in 1953 in Flint, Michigan. The program is intended to improve community relations between the city’s youth and the local police department. The program receives favorable media attention and expands throughout the 1960s to other school districts, including Los Angeles and Cincinnati.
